Michele Meek helped found the nonprofit organization Independent Media Publications in 2007 to preserve the archives of the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers’ (AIVF) publications, including the 30-year print magazine archives of The Independent Film & Video Monthly and several books. Under her tenure, The Independent took on a major archive project with University of Massachusetts, Amherst and the Internet Archive to preserve the 30-year print history of the publication.
In 2020, Emerson College acquired the publication and its assets.
Since 1976, The Independent has been the leading source of information for independent, grassroots, and activist media-makers, providing inspiration and information for their films and video projects, as well as creating connections to the larger independent media community.
